Preface: "When I was an undergraduate. I had no reel conception of how i might spend my life. I sampled a variety of subjects that provided me with not only breadth (if not depth) of knowledge but also a better understanding of my likes and dislikes.
Many students follow a similar pattern. Introductory courses and textbooks thus play an important role in the development of students by introducing them to disciplines about which they may have virtually no awareness.
Even within a specific area of study such as business administration. many students receive only a brief exposure to particular fields. An accounting major, for example, may take just one course in marketing or management, and a finance major may take only one course in marketing. It is for these students that this textbook is written as it introduces the three important facets of finance; financial institutions, investments, and corporate finance. Since many students will have only this exposure to the subject, this textbook gives them a working knowledge of the terms, environment, and mechanics of finance and financial decision making.
Besides introducing the finance student to the broad field of finance, a secondary purpose is to encourage the non finance major to do more work in the field. Survey and intro courses offer the instructor an excellent opportunity to encourage students to continue studying in that area. To facilitate this advanced study, students need sufficient background in the field, and by exposing students to all major facers of finance, this textbook lays that foundation."
