Because the prefatory material in the second edition which explains the nature, purpose, and editorial practices of AID is thorough and is still relevant, the material is repeated in the following pages and the points made therein will not be covered here.
More than five years have passed since publication of the second edition, however, and some comment does appear to be in order on developments since the preface to that edition was written.
Obviously, since AID-3 contains over 80,000 terms as opposed to the second edition's 45,000, there has been no slowdown in the coining of new acronyms and initialisms.
The staff has the definite impression, however, that much of the new acronymic coinage has characteristics quite different from terms usually encountered up to the time of the second edition.
